international training
course on
“Asian Elephant Breeding
and Health Management
in South East Asia”

Elephant Institute, Elephant
Reintroduction Foundation
and another 4 Veterinary
Schools, including Kasetsart
University(Thailand),
Utrecht University(The
Netherlands), University
of Peradeniya(Sri Lanka)
and Royal Veterinary College(UK)
had organized the international
training course in the
topic of “Asian Elephant
Breeding and Health Management
in South East Asia, which
composed of 2 main sessions
included the internet
based learning (distance
learning) between 26th
April – 10th May 2010.
The distance learning
was a co-operated between
Chiang Mai University
and Royal Veterinary College
which aimed to adjust
the participant’s knowledge
to the same level and
to be ready for practical
part. The second sessions
was held between 24th
– 28th May 2010 at Chiang
Mai University, National
Elephant Institute and
Doi Pha Muang Wildlife
sanctuary. |

Union Asia Link Program
on “Managing the health
and reproduction of elephant
populations in Asia”.
It was organized by the
Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine, Chiang Mai University
(FVM-CMU), the National
Elephant Institute (NEI),
the Elephant Reintroduction
Foundation, Thailand and
the Royal Veterinary College
(RVC), London University,
UK, with the support from
Faculty of Veterinary
and Animal Science (FVMAS)
of the University of Peradeniya
(UP), Sri Lanka, and the
Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine at Kasetsart
University (KU), Thailand. |

EU-Asia
Link Project on Managing
the Health and Reproduction
of Elephant Populatioins
in Asia launched at FVM-KU
October 8, the opening
ceremony of the EU-Asia
Link Project on Managing
the Health and Reproduction
of Elephant Populatioins
in Asia was opened at
Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine, Kasetsart University
(Bangken Campus). Sequently,
the international conference
on “Managing the Health
and Reproduction of Elephant
Populatioins in Asia”
was conducted after the
opening ceremony to October
10, 2007.There were over
120 participants from
10 countries.
Later,
the inception workshop
was hold duirng October
11-12, 2007 in order to
provide stage for Ph.D
and Master students to
present the thesis proposal
to the professors, advisors,
and experts from 4 partner
countries; KU and CMU-
Thailand, UU-Holland,
RVC-UK, and UP- Sri Lanka.

Training
for the Trainer Workshop
on Elephant Bull Handling
and Semen Evaluation at
KU and NEI
October 2007, NEI, CMU
and KU had joinly organized
the traning for the trainer
workshop on “Elephant
Bull Handling and Semen
Evaulation” to the Sri
Lankan participants at
Kasetsart University,
Bangkok and Elephant Conservation
Center, Lampang . The
participants gained knowledge
both theoritical and practical
expereince in bull handling,
semen collection and evaluation
till be able to apply
in the works and further
knowledge transfer.

Thai
advisers visit Ph.D. students
under EU-Asia Link Project
in Utrecht
9-23July 2008, Thai advisers,
Dr. Anuchai Pinyopummin,
Dr. Wittaya Suriyasathaporn
and Dr. Anucha Sirimalaisuwan,
had visited and provided
advisement to sri lankan
and thai Ph.D. students
under EU-Asia Link Project
in Utrehct, the Netherlands
during the visit.

Representatives
from 5 EU-Asia Link Project
Partners’ Meeting in London
The meeting of reprentatives
from 5 partners in EU-Asia
Link Project was hold
at RVC, London from 8-14
June 2008. The previous
management of the project
was evaluated. The meeting
had also provided a second-year-project
plan. Besides, the representatives
from UP and CMU round
up with RVC’s representatives
to brainstrom for proposing
the MSc. Curriculum in
wildlife at RVC and Zoo
London. In addition, Professor
Tom Stout, Dr. Thanu Pinyopummintr
and Dr. Chatchote Thitaram
had presented details
of the Project and researches
to scientific meeting
hold at IOZ, London.
