In a collaborative between National Elephant Institue (NEI), Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Zoological Park Organization of Thailand (ZPO), Elephant Research and Eduction Center (EREC) and vet school form three universities, including; Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University, has been working together on a project called ‘Elephant Genetic in Thailand’. This project aims to gather the genetic information from every individual elephant in Thailand both wild and captive. Genetic data provides information to improve elephant population management and also for illegal trading prevention. So far, we have been selected the elephant camp representative in Chiangmai which target to has genetic data of the whole herd. Currently, almost 300 blood samples were collected and are waiting for further analysis.
